  • 250 g blackberries (jeżyna), which were eaten on the spot

Kompostowisko KopernikaSome of us grow food. Some of us cook it. But all of us eat it! (and all of us waste it!)

Growing, cooking, and eating generates A LOT of organic waste. On September 8 at the Przemiany Festival there will be a Breakfast at the River picnic at The Copernicus Science Center in Warsaw, Poland. There you can learn how to deal with all of that waste — by composting it back into fertile soil!

Organic waste makes up more than 50% of all the waste in Warsaw’s wastestream. The vast majority of it is dumped in the landfill, where it has terrible environmental consequences through the production and release of methane gas (CH4) and carbon dioxide (CO2) into the atmosphere—two notorious global warming gases. What’s tragic is that organic waste can easily be turned into humus ( the living, organic part of soil). This humus can be used to grow food, feed plants, and heal damaged land – even land damaged by landfills.

This year Warsaw is implementing new waste disposal laws and fees, putting our waste and its dirty secrets into the spotlight. The new laws impose a 40% fee for not segregating waste (that is, recycling). However it appears there is little incentive to actually reduce the quantity of waste or indeed to do anything at all about organic waste.

At the we are going to do something about it! We are going to compost all of the organic waste generated at the Festiwal’s picnic and show how we could safely compost our own waste on a local level. From 11-15.30 we will be collecting and composting all of the organic waste from the picnic on site. Come and learn how to compost organic waste by actually doing it!

We will discuss composting basics and what you can do right now with your own waste at home. We will also prepare the bin to accept the waste.

We will make the first rounds to collect the waste from the picnic vendors and participants, take it back to the composting site and compost it. Through this activity you will learn how to build a compost pile.

Thorughout the event you will be able to see compost in various states of decomposition, and see what a vermicomposting bin looks like (worm composting!)

This project exposes the connection between consumption, eating, waste, and land not only by showing the consequences of waste, but also by demonstrating in a positive way that waste is really just fertility in disguise — and with a little bit of effort it can be recaptured and redirected, ultimately back into our own bodies.

Since 2011, Pixxe has been exploring and modifying public space and the use of land to create a more ecological, humane habitat for the life it supports. Activities include urban/community farming, community composting, foraging, eko-art projects, and DIY maker arts such as upcycling, crafting, citizen science, cooking and food preservation. See

Jodie is an American artist living in Warsaw since 2010. Her activities encompass numerous disciplines such as film and animation, craft, and social engagement. Her work explores how entities in an environment, living and otherwise, affect and control each other. At the heart of her concerns is the nature of Nature — our relation to it and place in it. She has been growing food organically since 1996 and composting waste since 2007. In 2011, in her Soil Garden Project, she composted over 20,000 liters of waste from the green market. She currently composts the waste of one hotel and about six families on her allotment garden in Rakowiec.

Syrop z mirabelką / Mirabelka syrop

The first day at the Now Port Festival at CSW Łaźnia in Gdansk, we made some drinks — Sumac-ade (Sumakiada), Blackberry juice, Mulberry juice, and we also used some Mirabella plums to make a syrup.

Mirabella can be yellow, orange or red. I’ve never been to place in Poland where I haven’t seen dozens and dozens of this tree. The fruit ripens all through August and sometimes even into September. They can also be rather tart so it’s best to pick them when the fruits are quite ripe, perhaps even those that have fallen on the ground are best! In Gdańsk, there were lots of red plums, so that’s what we used.

In the end we decided to add in the leftover blackberries and mulberries leftover from our juice-making. We combined this mixture with agar to make a sort of jello! It tasted FANTASTIC)

mirabella plums / mirabelki – 1000 g before pitting
sugar or honey / cukier lub miód — 500 ml sugar or slightly less honey or to taste
maple syrup / syrop klonowy – 1/4 cup
vanilla / wanilia prawdziwa – 1 tsp
balsalmic vinegar / ocet balsaliczny – ½ tsp
lemon / limonka – a few squeezes

Cut plums and put into the pot.

Pour the sweetener over the fruit.

Add maple syrup. vanilla, vinegar
Add 240 ml clean water

Cook on high, crushing the plums, about 10-30 minutes.

Strain and cool. What falls through is the syrup.

Remove the pits from what’s left behind –– > from this you have jam!

Yes, friends, that’s the best I could do. One doesn’t want to mess too much with genius television cartoon lyrics! A couple of months ago, back when it was warm, I went to a tiny spot in the former GDR, now simply called The Eastern Part of Germany, in a cool little place called Lausitzer Zeitreisen, and along with about 19 other awesome people made …. things …. out …. of …. TRASH! It was a meeting organized by Berlin’s fabulous TRIAL AND ERROR. THANKS!

It was called TRASHFORMERS. I didn’t bring a camera (broken!) and so a very grateful thanks to TauMH of Trial & Error for taking and sharing these pictures.

If you look at those pictures, you’ll see all the wonderful things we made: rabbit cages, silk screens, puppet theaters, puppets, paper, books, chairs, loungers, rocket stoves, sauna/sweat lodge, art, plus we learned a lot about group decision making and collaboration.

I got very  inspired with all the amazing metal objects lying around the place and made something I haven’t made for a very long time —  A DRUM KIT OUT OF JUNK! I built it right into the ground, as an addition to the kids playground that was already on the spot. The old washing drum had such a sweet sound! Ahh…. Here’s some pics (all taken by Tau).

WORM DAY (Photo by MH)

Yesterday we took a step towards fulfilling our Worm Dream to one day have an abundant healthy population of composting worms at Pixxe, and to help people compost their own organic waste in their own homes using worms.



The design we are working on is the stackable worm bin. We discovered that from a single pallet we can make three boxes and a base. The boxes will be approximately 40 cm x 30 cm, with a depth of either 12,5-13 cm or 21 cm. We’ll start with 12,5 cm.







Our first batch of worms are living in this 20 liter black bucket. Dimensions: 35 cm diameter, 25 cm deep. First, the bedding: brown leaves, damp cardboard, newspaper, paper, straw–all of these ripped, shredded, or chopped, plus some wood chips. To this approximately 3 cups of water were added as well as 1 handful of sand, 1 handful of good soil from the garden, and 1 handful of crushed egg shells. Mix well. The bucket, about 80% full, was then left for about two days to let the water soak in. The consistency of the bedding was like a damp sponge, as is often recommended.

Into the bucket went the 500 red composting worms (dżdżownice kaliforniskie, Eisenia fetida) along with the bedding in which they were sent, which was quite decomposed. The worms quickly scurried down and out of sight. Next the bucket was topped off with a 10cm layer of leaves and straw. I decided not to drill holes in the bucket because it has quite a bit of surface area for “breathing” and the bedding itself has quite a bit of air space. So, I will need to check frequently to make sure it’s getting enough air. The bucket is in the bathroom, where it’s nice and toasty.



The worms were left alone for about 3 days to get used to their new home, and today we fed them 250g of finely chopped and rotting pears, apples, blueberries, raspberries, cabbage, kale, lettuce, zuchinni, coffee grounds, banana peels, egg shells. YUM! Go worm, go! We put the food in one half of the bucket, buried about half way. They looked really great in there wiggling around. When the stackable bin is finished, I’ll post some more photos! We have more than 500 composting worms who need a home. This, in fact, is a very small amount of worms! Did you know that 1 kg of worms (that’s 1000!) can eat up to 0.5 kg a day in waste. That’s almost 4 kg per week. Come and and prototype worm bins with us on Saturday, October 6 from 13.00-17.00. We’ll be using wood pallets and plastic bins. If you can, bring a plastic bin at least 25 cm deep or a pallet!

On Sept 19, 2012 I held a jam-making party in the local park as part of the M4 Rakowiec community action project organized by the great people at Odblokuj. We made jam from wild elderberries, wild grapes and Antonówki apples from the garden. Wild fruits of Rakowiec! There were some really sweet old ladies there, but sadly I didn’t get any photos of them.

We have kilos upon kilos of Antonówki (Atonovka) apples and we are going to preserve them this Sunday right at the Pixxe Garden. Today I did a test drive to see how it would work to take Banacha’s organic waste next week. At 7AM, I took a 120 liter (about 45 gallons) container to the amazing, beautiful woman who handles the garbage there. She told me she could fill it in an hour. She also told me that we could to the test today, but that the Security wants me to have permission from the market administration to continue next week. She gave me their number. I have to call on Monday. I’m scared. In my experience so far with Polish officials, “Permission” is another word for “No.” But she also said that they were nice people, so I can hope.

At 8AM, I returned and the container was full. We tried to put it in my bike cart. My bike fell over. Too heavy. So we put it into two huge garbage bags. That worked. The ride back was slow but smooth. The bearings in the wheels of the cart made a sound, however, that tells me they won’t be working long… I returned four times and collected about 800 liters or so.

With two bikes we could easily collect twice that much.

What’s great about fresh vegetable waste is that it is so beautiful and smells good! However, I can’t process it until tomorrow, when it might not be so pretty. Thank goodness the weather is cool…..

Pixxe Garden - Public Entrance

Pixxe Garden – Public Entrance

Pixxe has a new garden! It has been given the most original name: PIXXE GARDEN. It’s located in Rakowiec on the border of Szczęśliwice in Ochota, Warsaw, Poland.  GPS 52.198990, 20.967910, to be precise. We still have the Railroad Garden, but the main activities will now take place at the Pixxe Garden.

It will be open to the public for the upcoming SOIL GARDEN PROJECT, but there is an awful lot of work to do to make it ready for more ambitious activities. I’m hoping that with this new, more accessible, and less primitive garden (for example, it has water), we will be able to open up on a more regular basis by next spring. As such, Allotment Sunday / Niedziele na działce won’t be happening for awhile — it will be more like Codzienne na działce — everyday at the garden! So if you want to stop by, please let me know. Everyone is always welcome and there is always something to do.

Though the Pixxe Garden is not squatted, it also sort-of is. I thought I was beginning to understand how the allotment gardens work here, but now I have discovered a whole new in-between type of garden, called tymczasowy, or temporary. The Pixxe Garden is tymczasowy.

As I have written about before, there are “official” gardens (the Rodzinny Ogród Działkowy or ROD / Family Garden Allotments) and then there are “unofficial” gardens, like the Railroad Garden, which is basically a squat. ROD are gated communities. You must be a member and have a key to gain access. What is interested about temporary gardens like the Pixxe Garden is that sometimes they are located WITHIN an ROD, but are legally “unofficial”. This particular stretch of land abuts an “official” ROD and was taken by people in 1980. They have been temporary for 32 years! So the Pixxe Garden has one “Public” entrance, on Racławicka, and one “Private” entrance from within the ROD Zelmot. This dual status suits me well. I like being in between. And afterall, the city owns the land in any case!
